Tuesday, four special election runoffs took place across the state of Mississippi — two in the state Senate and two in the House of Representatives — and Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann is welcoming the Senate’s new members.
Bart Williams (R) was elected to serve Senate District 15 (Choctaw, Montgomery, Oktibbeha & Webster) by defeating Joyce Meek Yates. Williams replaces Senator Gary Jackson, who stepped down in June due to health concerns.
“Senator-elect Bart Williams is a community leader and brings to the table more than 25 years’ experience as a small business owner. His perspective will be critical to growing our workforce and our economy, which is built on small businesses across Mississippi,” Hosemann said.
In District 39 (Copiah, Lawrence, Lincoln & Walthall), Jason Barrett defeated Bill Sones to fill the term of former Senator Sally Doty after she was appointed by the governor to lead the Public Utilities Staff.
“Senator-elect Jason Barrett has a young family and similar experience running a small law office. Coupled with his legal background, he will be an asset as the Legislature seeks to help our State move forward and recover from the pandemic when we reconvene in January,” the Lt. Governor said.
In the House races, Jackson City Councilman De’Keither Stamps (D) defeated Robert Lee Jr. in House District 66 (Hinds) and Lynn Wright (R) won the race in House District 37 (Oktibehha, Clay & Lowndes) by defeating David Chism. Stamps fills the seat of Jarvis Dortch after the former representative left to become the new State Director of the American Civil Liberties Union. Wright replaces Gary Chism, who retired back in June.
