Students, faculty, and staff at Lumberton High School are mourning the death of chemistry teacher Susan Copeland.
Copeland, 59, was one of two victims killed in a car crash on Wednesday afternoon. On Thursday, the Lamar County School District superintendent released a statement, saying the longtime educator left an “indelible mark” during her career decades-long career.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the deeply saddening news of the passing of one of our esteemed educators, Susan Copeland, in a tragic car accident,” Dr. Steven Hampton said. “On behalf of the entire Lamar County School District, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Copeland family, friends, colleagues, and students during this incredibly difficult time”
“Ms. Copeland was a dedicated teacher who made a significant impact on the lives of those around her. Her passion for education and commitment to the development of our students left an indelible mark.”
For the time being, grief counselors will be available to anyone in need within the Lamar County School District. Hampton added that in the coming days and weeks, they will continue to celebrate and remember the contributions Copeland made to Lumberton High School.
The other person who lost their life in the crash was Christopher Lewis, 30. The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, which took place on U.S. Highway 11.
