One person has been arrested following a wreck in Gulfport that left seven injured Sunday night.

Beckham Earl III, 49, was taken into custody and charged with three counts of leaving the scene of an accident causing injuries.

According to the Gulfport Police Department, Earl was recklessly speeding down Highway 90 while attempting to race another vehicle when he struck an uninvolved car and caused a pole to fall on top of it trapping the occupants inside.

Earl then fled on foot and was later taken into custody by the Biloxi Police Department in the area nearby.

First responders took five of the victims to a local hospital while another had to be airlifted to New Orleans. The seventh person was treated at the scene after they refused to be transported by ambulance.

Earl is being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center on a $250,000 bond.
