Marine Veteran Raises Money To Help Disabled Vets

Scott Burns of Tupelo has been raising money for veterans through his 7 Days for the Troops campaign for several years now. Burns, a veteran of the Marine Corps, has a unique approach to get attention for his fundraiser. For seven days, he camps out inside the Tupelo mall’s food court for 168 hours straight. Throughout each day, the former Marine gets mall patrons to donate money and buy raffle tickets for items donated along with games for the crowds and music all help raise money for Purple Heart Homes, an organization that provides housing solutions for disabled veterans.

Burns has a very personal bond to this annual fundraiser.

In 1991 his leg was injured while serving in the Marine Corps. Burns had a total of 21 surgeries before deciding to have his leg amputated instead of having more surgeries and more pain medication.

Now the 7 Days for the Troops event is coming to central Mississippi. November 1-8, Burns will be at the Malls of Mississippi in Pearl to recreate the event that has been so successful in Tupelo for disabled veterans for the past 13 years.
