An investigation has been launched after police shot and killed a man trying to ignite a propane tank to cause an explosion in Pascagoula.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, which has taken over the case, said the incident happened Thursday at approximately 12:20 p.m. near Magnolia Street. The subject allegedly drove his vehicle through a fence and parked near a large propane tank before trying to cause the explosion.
When members of the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Gautier Police Department responded to the scene, the subject fled on foot, leading to a brief pursuit. An exchange of gunfire between the subject and law enforcement occurred, per MBI, with the subject receiving fatal injuries.
No officers or deputies were seriously injured during the incident. The subject’s name has not been released.
The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives are also involved in the investigation. MBI will turn over its findings to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office after the investigation concludes.
