Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann has selected Sandra McKiernon as the newest member of the Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board.
McKiernon, a 40-year veteran educator, will take over for Kimberly Remak. Remak recently resigned from her position on the board after winning the seat of state representative for District 7.
“Sandra has 40 years of experience serving in districts from the Coast to the Delta. She truly cares about the children across Mississippi and understands what it takes to make a school successful – academically and otherwise,” Hosemann said. “I know she will continue to ensure applicants are ready for the challenges and opportunities that come with running any school.”
Over her distinguished career, McKiernon has taught elementary and middle school in Long Beach, Pascagoula, Yazoo City, and Grenada public schools. She also spent time at Covenant Christian School in Yazoo City.
During her time in the Pascagoula-Gautier School District, McKiernon was named Trent Lott Middle School’s Teacher of the Year. She has also been recognized as a Faculty Scholar at Delta State University and for her outstanding service in education by the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation.
“When our schools and students succeed, our state succeeds,” McKiernon said. “I am very grateful for any opportunity to serve, especially in the area which has been so important to me personally and professionally.”
McKiernon joins the seven-member board in charge of overseeing Mississippi’s 12 authorized charter schools, approving applications for new schools, and determining whether underperforming schools should close. Other members include Jean Cook, Lee Durrett, Don Hinton, Candace Robins, Marcy Scoggins, and Jennifer Jackson Whittier.
