As the current winter storm continues to move through Mississippi, transportation officials are reporting that ice has been spotted on roads and bridges in 75 of the state’s 82 counties.

The cold snap has brought temperatures in the single digits to portions of north Mississippi, including the Delta. In the central and southern areas of the state, temperatures have reached the teens, causing ice to form on roadways in the majority of Mississippi.

Rest assured, MDOT Executive Director Brad White has reiterated that crews are prepared to handle the current conditions and will be working to ensure that those who have to commute are able to reach their destinations safely.

“MDOT workers are standing by, closely monitoring the weather updates from the National Weather Service, and are ready to respond to treat roadways to keep motorists as safe as possible during this winter weather event,” White said.

Officials encourage the public to consider the following driving tips while traveling on roads and bridges that could be icy:

  • Remember, ice will form on bridges and overpasses quicker than on the road
  • Slow down. Winter weather conditions can create black ice
  • Allow more space between your car and the vehicles around you
  • Brake early and gently to avoid skidding. Never slam on the brakes
  • Avoid distractions, such as talking or texting on a cell phone
