The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has announced a change in location for one disaster recovery center open to survivors after the destructive swath of mid-March tornadoes.
MEMA announced in a press release that operations in Grenada have moved from the Ministry Center to 1240 Fairground Rd., Suite G. This brings the list of disaster recovery centers, where staff is on site to help survivors apply for federal assistance, to:
- Covington County: Bobby Mooney Building at 1613 South Fir Ave., Collins, MS 39428
- Grenada County: 1240 Fairground Rd., Suite G, Grenada, MS 38901
- Jefferson Davis County: Granby VFP at 957 East Stephens Rd., Prentiss, MS 39474
- Leflore County: Leflore County EMA Office at 701 US 82, Greenwood, MS 38930
- Walthall County: Walthall EOC at 908 Amory Dr., Tylertown, MS 39667
All disaster recovery centers are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays.
While MEMA, in coordination with county leadership and federal officials, has scaled back the total number of disaster recovery centers over the past few weeks, survivors in the following counties can apply for Individual Assistance from the Federal Emergency: Covington, Grenada, Issaquena, Itawamba, Jefferson Davis, Leflore, Marion, Montgomery, Pike, Smith, and Walthall.
The Public Assistance program is available to residents and business owners and can include grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses.
Residents in the approved counties who sustained loss during the severe weather that included 18 tornadoes across March 14 and March 15 can apply online or by calling 1-800-462-7585. Those who are hearing impaired should call 1-800-462-7585. The disaster number is: DR-4874.
MEMA also announced that an additional county has been added to the list of approved areas for Public Assistance, which supports municipalities and counties with grant assistance for debris removal, emergency protective measures, and restoration of public infrastructure.
“MEMA has also successfully appealed its case to FEMA, requesting that Montgomery County be included on the list of approved counties for Public Assistance,” the release noted.
With the addition, the Public Assistance program is available in Calhoun, Carroll, Covington, Grenada, Humphreys, Issaquena, Itawamba, Jefferson Davis, Lee, Leflore, Marion, Montgomery, Pike, Prentiss, Sharkey, Smith, Walthall, and Washington counties.
As of Thursday, 6,821 registrations have been received for disaster assistance. $15.7 million has been approved to help survivors recover.
