The Mississippi Department of Revenue is urging residents to avoid falling for the latest text message scam.
Scammers have been sending out phishing texts regarding tax refund requests while claiming to be from the government agency. This specific scam directs one to an unofficial website where the public is lured into giving out sensitive information, such as a credit card number or access to banking accounts.

“These texts are NOT from the Mississippi Department of Revenue and are NOT LEGITIMATE,” a statement from the department reads. “The department will not send requests for payment or request personal information via text message.”
