As the nation mourns the death of former President Jimmy Carter, many of Mississippi’s elected officials have taken to social media to weigh in on the life and legacy left by the revered peanut farmer turned politician.

Carter, the last Democratic presidential candidate to win the Magnolia State, passed away at age 100 on Sunday. The 39th American Commander-in-Chief, Carter was the longest-living elected official to hold a post in the Oval Office.

His time in federal office may have been cut short to just one term, but Carter — guided by a strong Christian faith — was known for his humanitarian efforts and genuineness throughout his life. After losing the 1980 election to Republican Ronald Reagan, the Georgian embarked on a new journey as a global peacemaker.

Carter and his late wife, Rosalynn, went on to establish The Carter Center in 1982 where they began an international campaign to promote democracy, human rights, and healthcare solutions. He built homes in Third World countries, worked to eradicate the guinea worm disease, and championed social development abroad.

After a life of service to the world, Carter passed away in his hometown of Plains, Ga., where he spent the last 22 months in hospice care. The following Mississippi elected officials have offered condolences following Carter’s passing:

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith

President Carter led the life of a God-fearing man whose humanitarian works at home and around the world will benefit people for generations. My prayers go out the entire Carter family. Rest in peace, Mr. President.

— U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (@SenHydeSmith) December 29, 2024

Congressman Trent Kelly

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of President Jimmy Carter.

Congressman Bennie Thompson

Congressman Mike Ezell

President Jimmy Carter dedicated his life to serving the Navy, his home state of Georgia, and the United States. He was a man of deep faith and unwavering commitment to improving the world. Suzette and I send our condolences to his family and loved ones during this time.

State Attorney General Lynn Fitch

President Jimmy Carter lived a life of service, both in and out of elected office. He was a humanitarian and a model of decency and civility. Join me in praying for the Carter family during this difficult time.

State Treasurer David McRae

“God is not my personal valet. God does not build a protective fence around my life, keep me from trouble, fulfill my personal desires, or guarantee my success. However, through prayer God offers me comfort, reassurance, satisfaction, courage, hope, and peace.” -Jimmy Carter

— Treasurer David McRae (@DavidMcRaeMS) December 29, 2024

The former president will be honored with a state funeral in Washington D.C. on January 9 before he is laid to rest in Plains next to his late spouse, who passed away at age 96 in November 2023.
