Mike Hurst, the chair of the Mississippi Republican Party, has been tabbed as general counsel to the Republican National Committee.
Hurst’s confirmation by the RNC’s executive committee came on Oct. 8 and makes the former U.S. attorney the top legal officer at the RNC. Hurst will advise national party chair Joe Gruters and other party officials on all legal matters related to operations, strategy, and activities. He takes over for Indiana’s John Hammond.
“I am proud to welcome Mike as the RNC’s new General Counsel,” Gruters said in a press release. “As a former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi appointed by President Trump, Mike brings invaluable legal expertise and a proven commitment to our party through his time at the Mississippi GOP.
“I also want to thank John Hammond for his years of tireless service to the RNC and wish him the best now that he has chosen to step down.”
The Mississippi Republican Party also issued a press release, congratulating Hurst on the appointment and calling him “an outstanding choice to serve in this critical role at the national level.” Hurst, who has over 20 years of legal experience, was named chair of the state party in May 2024.
“We’re confident he will continue to bring the same passion, wisdom, and dedication to the RNC that he has shown throughout his career in public service and leadership,” Mississippi Republican Party executive director Rance Bilbo said.
Hurst will serve as general counsel to the RNC while maintaining his position as party chair on the state level. He previously served as the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi from 2017-21.
