Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is mourning the loss of a football player killed in a car wreck on Sunday afternoon.
Marcus Dickey, 22, was a transfer defensive lineman from Nicholls State and was traveling back from his former school’s game to Perkinston for practice when the crash occurred. Details of the crash have not been released.
“He was doing good. He was the kind of kid who was the first one in the meeting, one of the first guys out at practice, and one of the hardest workers in the weight room,” MGCCC head coach Jack Wright said. “He always had a big ol’ smile on his face. He was everything you would want out of a teammate. Everything.”
A Mississippi native and standout at Biloxi High School, Dickey earned MHSAA 6A All-State first-team honors as a senior in 2020. In his final season with the Indians, he totaled 61 tackles and committed to play at Nicholls. He spent the 2022 season on the team’s practice squad before appearing in nine games in 2023 with two tackles as a redshirt freshman.
“We are heartbroken by the passing of Marcus Dickey,” MGCCC President Dr. Mary S. Graham said. “Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, teammates, and coaches, during this very difficult time. At Gulf Coast, our athletics program is like a family, and we will stand together to support one another through this tragedy.”
Counseling is available on campus for players, coaches, and staff impacted by Dickey’s passing. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
MGCCC kicks off the 2025 season on Thursday at home against East Mississippi Community College, and according to Wright, the team will use the entire season to honor their former teammate.
“He was a very positive young man in every regard. We’re very, very said as coaches and players. We’re going to play and honor him this week and the rest of the year,” Wright said.
