The early part of this week will bring dangerously hot conditions to Mississippi, as the National Weather Service warns that prolonged time outdoors could become hazardous.
The NWS issued an Elevated Risk (Level 2 of 5) for dangerous heat across much of the state on Sunday and Monday. The northwestern corner – including Southaven, Tunica, Clarksdale, Cleveland, and surrounding communities – is under a Significant Risk (Level 3 of 5).
High temperatures are expected to climb into the mid-to upper-90s, while heat indices are forecast to range from 105 to 115 degrees, making it feel well into the triple digits.
The dangerous conditions will continue Tuesday and Wednesday, with the area under a Significant Risk expanding to cover much of the state. The remaining portions of Mississippi will be under an Elevated Risk.
The NWS is urging Mississippians to recognize the signs of heat-related illness, as the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke increases during prolonged outdoor activity in extreme temperatures.
Officials also remind residents to never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles and to drink more water than usual when spending time outdoors.
