This Monday, landmarks across Mississippi will be lit up in teal in honor of November being Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.
The annual nationwide effort is part of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Light the World Teal program and aims to “literally shine a light on Alzheimer’s disease and show support for the millions of people affected by it,” per a press release from AFA.
Places in Mississippi participating in the effort include the Mississippi Governor’s Mansion and Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson, Grammy Museum Mississippi in Cleveland, Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, the Biloxi Lighthouse, and Round Island Lighthouse in Pascagoula.
“We are grateful to have some of Mississippi’s most high-profile sites raising awareness and supporting the millions of people affected by Alzheimer’s disease,” AFA President and CEO Charles J. Fuschillo Jr. said. “From large skyscrapers to stadiums to small town halls, every landmark that lights up teal on November 3 brightens the spotlight on Alzheimer’s awareness across the world.”
The Mississippi landmarks are among more than 1,500 sites across all 50 U.S. states and 13 other countries and territories going teal for Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. The AFA also encourages people to wear teal or use social media to help raise awareness throughout November.
Nearly seven million Americans – including approximately 62,000 Mississippians – are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease. The number of people with Alzheimer’s is projected to double by 2060, according to the CDC.
Families looking for additional information about Alzheimer’s disease or support services can contact AFA at (866) 232-8484 or visit the nonprofit’s website.
