As temperatures continue to drop across Mississippi, flu cases are skyrocketing ahead of the holidays.
The Mississippi State Department of Health reports that as of December 9, the Magnolia State, Alabama, and New Mexico had the highest level of activity in the nation.
Data shows that cases are rising most rapidly among individuals between the ages of five and 24.
Flu is a seasonal threat that can result in extended illness or hospitalization. Health experts recommend vaccination as the best way to protect adults and children from the virus and its complications.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourages everyone six months of age and older to get a flu shot. Vaccination can reduce flu illnesses and prevent flu-related hospitalizations and deaths, experts say.

Flu shots for children under 18 and under-insured adults are now available at county health departments across Mississippi. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for full protection against the virus to take effect.
