A former Clinton Sonic employee has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for armed robbery of another Sonic.
According to Madison and Rankin Counties District Attorney “Bubba” Bramlett, police officers were dispatched around 6 a.m. on Jan. 7, 2026, to the Sonic on Highway 51 in Ridgeland for an armed robbery call.
The victim claimed that 19-year-old Deon Luckett Jr. forced his way into the store with a gun while the manager was attempting to exit. Luckett reportedly cut the lights and surveillance system off on his way to the safe, which would not open. He ultimately settled on a bag of money that contained approximately $50.
Luckett attempted to rob the victim at his car, but the victim was able to escape.
Upon the Ridgeland Police Department’s arrival on scene, officers discovered a ticket from a driver service bureau that eventually led to Luckett, thanks to surveillance videos showing him renewing his driver’s license the day before the robbery.
The Ridgeland Police Department obtained a search warrant for Luckett’s house and located the clothes he wore during the crime, Sonic employee clothes, and the bag of money stolen during the robbery. Shortly after, Luckett was taken into custody at his place of employment – the Sonic in Clinton.
“It is obvious to me that this individual used the information he learned while working at another Sonic in the area to target the Ridgeland business,” Bramlett stated. “He attacked an innocent person who was simply attempting to work an honest job and earn a living. I want to thank the Ridgeland Police Department for their excellent investigatory work on this case which allowed my office to resolve it quickly.”
On July 29, Luckett pleaded guilty in Madison County Circuit Court to armed robbery and was sentenced to 18 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
