After leading by one run for nearly half the contest, the Ole Miss baseball team could not hold off the Mississippi State bats as the Bulldogs went on to a 5-1 win in the annual Governor’s Cup on Wednesday night.

The Rebels got on the board in the second inning with a solo shot from Judd Utermark to take a 1-0 lead. The home run was the only run given up by either team’s starting pitcher as both Pico Kohn of Mississippi State and Grayson Saunier of Ole Miss had solid outings on the mound.

In the bottom of the fifth, Bulldog first baseman Hunter Hines singled to left center, knocking in Joe Powell to tie the game.

With one out in the eighth, Mississippi State outfielder Connor Husjak was hit by a pitch. He then advanced to third on a wild pitch from Mason Morris, resuscitating the Rebels’ defensive woes that have proven detrimental all season. A failed inning-ending double play off the bat of Logan Kohler knocked Husjak in for what would be the winning run.

For insurance purposes, Mississippi State went on to score three more in the frame, highlighted by a two-run double from David Mershon.

Mississippi State advanced its Governor’s Cup streak to six wins in a row as the Rebels have not won the annual midweek game at Trustmark Park in Pearl since 2015.
