D1Baseball released its weekly rankings Monday morning with two Mississippi teams climbing and another hanging tight.
Mississippi State (34-10, 13-8 SEC) moved back into the top 10 – landing at No. 10 to be exact – after winning its midweek game against Memphis and taking all three from LSU in Starkville. Brian O’Connor’s club used a Kevin Milewski walk-off home run on Friday and two come-from-behind wins on Saturday and Sunday to earn the program’s first sweep over the Tigers since 1985.
It’s the first time Mississippi State has been in the top 10 since April 6. The Bulldogs were ranked as high as No. 4 earlier in the season.
Coming in at No. 12 was Southern Miss (31-13, 13-8 Sun Belt), which walked off its midweek game over Tulane before taking two of three at South Alabama. The Golden Eagles squeaked out a one-run win on Friday before mauling the Jaguars, 16-7, on Saturday and then dropping the Sunday rubber match.
Ole Miss (31-14, 11-10 SEC) stayed put at No. 17 after winning its midweek game against Murray State before dropping two of three to No. 5 Georgia. The Rebels erased an 8-0 deficit and turned it into a 10-8 win during the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader before dropping the last two games of the series.
With the regular season winding down, all three teams have virtually clinched postseason spots but play over the next three weeks and conference tournaments will help decide hosting statuses.
