One of Mississippi’s top wildlife officials is being honored on the national level for his contributions to the state’s parks and outdoors.
Andre Hollis, the state parks director for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, was announced as this year’s winner of the Canadian Bear Trap Award. The award is presented annually by the National Association of State Park Directors and goes to a state park director who demonstrates exceptional leadership, innovation, and commitment to the management and preservation of state parks.
Hollis, who has been with MDWFP for 28 years, is the second Mississippian to win the award. Aubrey Rozzell, who served as state park director from 1978 to 1989, won the award exactly 40 years ago in 1985.

“Receiving this award is a tremendous honor, but it also reflects the hard work and dedication of our entire state parks team,” Hollis said. “To see this recognition return to Mississippi after more than four decades is a proud moment for all of us who care deeply about protecting and improving our parks for future generations.”
Hollis oversees operations at Mississippi’s 24 state parks that include secluded spots for RV or tent camping, fishing and hiking areas, and other activities.
