Mississippi Therapy Animals looks to address mental health in a unique way

Mississippi Therapy Animals

As efforts to combat the mental health crisis across the nation increase, one Mississippi organization is looking to provide a solution to those in need through a unique experience.

Mississippi Therapy Animals, a nonprofit organization, aims to increase mental health and well-being through the use of specially-trained animals.

Founder and head animal trainer Katrina Miller works diligently to have the animals specifically trained to connect with an individual emotionally in order to resolve the mental health issues of those in need.

“A lot of animals are not accustomed to that, but our animals don’t flinch and they know what their job is, and they go right in, and usually that’s going to help deescalate what is going on,” said Miller in an interview with SuperTalk’s Rebecca Turner.

In addition, Miller says that the organization also provides specially instructed psychiatric service animals as well as support animals for those who qualify. In order to best meet the needs of those who qualify, the organization works with each individual’s medical provider before issuing a service animal.

From Chicken Nugget the Australian Shepherd to Twix the red kangaroo, Mississippi Therapy Animals has an option for anybody experiencing difficulties with their mental health.

The full interview with Miller can be watched below.
