Ahead of National Nonprofit Day, which is Aug. 17, Mississippi Treasurer David McRae is urging local nonprofits to check and see if they are entitled to any unclaimed money.
McRae, for the past few years, has been keen on his initiative to return unclaimed money to individual Mississippians, along with organizations that do good work. For many nonprofits, tapping into these funds could support their missions to better local communities.
“Nonprofits pour their hearts, time, and resources into serving Mississippians. Now, it’s our turn to give something back. By returning unclaimed money to these organizations, the State Treasury can help them continue their mission of changing lives and strengthening communities across our state,” McRae stated.
“Nonprofits play a crucial role in Mississippi’s social fabric, serving as beacons of hope and catalysts for positive change,” he continued. “Many of these organizations may be unaware that they are entitled to unclaimed money, which includes forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and more.”
The process of reclaiming funds, according to McRae, is straightforward and requires minimal effort from nonprofit leaders. By taking a few moments to search the treasury’s website, organizations could uncover financial resources that may have been overlooked or forgotten.
McRae and his team have been involved in returning historic levels of unclaimed money to Mississippians. In 2024 alone, the state treasury returned $40 million to those who had not received funds owed to them by the government. Overall, around $120 million in unclaimed funds have been given back to rightful owners in the state.
