The temperatures in Mississippi may feel right for a gathering around a bonfire, but officials are asking the public to hold off for now due to an increased risk of wildfires spreading.
While a nice outdoor fire might be a reprieve, as much of the Magnolia State is expected to experience a “significant freeze” overnight Monday, the Mississippi Forestry Commission says the cons outweigh the pros. The prospect of wildfires running rampant has increased due to the low humidity and high winds that Mississippi is currently experiencing.
Until the outdoor atmosphere regulates itself, folks are asked to voluntarily avoid debris burning, campfires, bonfires, active fire pits, and burning of leaves and brush. A burn ban is not officially in effect. According to officials, nine out of 10 wildfires are caused by humans.
“Please do your part to protect our homes, forests, and firefighters,” a statement from the Mississippi Forestry Commission reads. “Wait until conditions improve.”
