As temperatures try to drop across Mississippi with fall setting in and winter to follow, healthcare officials are encouraging people to get updated vaccinations ahead of the annual respiratory virus season.
“The rates of respiratory viruses such as influenza, [respiratory syncytial virus], and COVID tend to increase during the fall and winter months as more people gather indoors,” Mississippi State Department of Health officials stated in a press release. “In Mississippi, typical influenza season usually peaks anywhere from December through March, but influenza activity can occur earlier or later, so it is important to receive your flu vaccine prior to peak influenza season.”
Everyone 6 months of age and older is recommended by MSDH to get updated flu and COVID vaccines. Protection against RSV is recommended for babies and older adults. Vaccinations are available through primary care physicians, clinics, and pharmacies across the state.
MSDH county health departments offer free vaccinations for those whose insurance does not cover it. Call (855) 767-0710 to schedule an appointment.

The CDC estimated that during the 2023-24 season, flu vaccinations prevented 9.8 million flu-related illnesses, 4.8 million medical visits, 120,000 hospitalizations, and 7,900 deaths.
Non-vaccination tips on how to protect yourself and others this respiratory virus season include covering coughs and sneezes, washing and sanitizing hands often, cleaning frequently touched surfaces, using an air purifier indoors, or allowing more outdoor air to come inside by cracking a window or opening a door.
