It’s officially breast cancer awareness month and the Mississippi State Department of Health and the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science are putting on a 5K walk/run to support breast cancer prevention.

On October 21, the inaugural Louisa Denson Wellness Fair will be held at the LeFleur’s Bluff playground in Jackson from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The MSDH will offer free health screenings during the weekend fest. Food trucks and other family activities will be on-site for attendees to enjoy.

Denson was employed with the MSDH for 42 years she served as Director of Disparity Elimination, Director of Minority Affairs, and Office System Advisor for all clerical staff.

The longtime public health expert also worked as Director of Mary C. Jones Clinic, Public Health Advisor for the Sexually Transmitted Disease Program, and a Clerk in Vital Records and Statistics.

Denson was awarded two of the highest awards by the Mississippi Public Health Association for outstanding public health and community service. She passed away in July 2018.
