Data shared by Mississippi’s leading medical expert outlines the mortality rate for patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in the state.

Between the onset of the pandemic and March 2021, the MSDH data shows that there were 32,098 COVID-19-associated hospital discharges in Mississippi. Of these, 30,349 (94.6%) were among Mississippi residents. The number of in-hospital deaths “with a COVID-19 diagnostic code” was 4,761.

State Health Officer Dr. Thomas shared that this represents an overall mortality rate of 14.8% for hospitalized patients. That number climbed to 37.4% for patients who were transferred to the ICU and 64.4% for patients placed on a ventilator.

Dr. Dobbs expressed that the best strategy to avoid being hospitalized is a combination of vaccinations and, for those who test positive, getting the monoclonal antibody treatment.
