On Thursday, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is reporting 1,661 more cases of COVID-19 in Mississippi, 53 deaths, and 224 ongoing outbreaks in long-term care facilities. That makes this the third day in a row the MSDH has reported less than 2,500 new cases.
In a COVID-19 Health Care Town Hall on Tuesday, Dr. Paul Byers of MSDH noted that Mississippi may be nearing the end of the current wave.
“When we look overall, it’s not just our case numbers that are coming down and our deaths are slowly coming down when we look at the trends, we are seeing other indicators that tell us we’re on the back end of this current wave,” Byers said. “We’re seeing less emergency department visits for COVID. We’re seeing less demand for testing. We’re seeing decreased impact in our nursing homes as far as nursing home outbreaks. These are all positive indicators that we’re moving in the right direction.”
