The NCAA has voted to direct each NCAA division to immediately consider modernization of bylaws and policies regarding financial opportunities for college athletes for use of their name, image and likeness.

The decision comes as more states push for legislation which allows athletes to attend a university and benefit financially from endorsements.

In a press release, NCAA board chair Michael V. Drake said the board realized that it must embrace change to provide the best possible experience for college athletes.

California recently passed a law, which would make it illegal for universities, beginning in 2023, to punish athletes for accepting endorsement deals.
