Derek Carr announced his decision to retire Saturday morning, following the news that the New Orleans Saints quarterback may have to get shoulder surgery this offseason.
Carr played 11 seasons, the first nine of which came as a member of the Raiders after being selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft out of Fresno State.

In 2023, he signed with New Orleans and went on to compile a 14-13 record as a starter, battling injuries throughout his two seasons with the Saints. He missed seven games in 2024 due to oblique, hand, and head injuries. In late March, while preparing for the 2025 season, Carr experienced an injury to his right shoulder. He was set to enter the third year of a four-year, $150 million contract.
“Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather (Carr), I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League,” Carr said, per an official announcement from the Saints. “For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience.
“It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.”
Carr retires with a 77-92 overall record as a starter without ever winning a playoff game. His final stat line rounds out at 41,245 passing yards, 257 passing touchdowns, and 112 interceptions.
New Orleans drafted Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round of this year’s draft. Other signal-callers on the roster include Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener. New head coach Kellen Moore said Saturday afternoon an open competition will be held for the starting position.
