Deputies with the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department have given the all-clear after receiving reports of possible explosives in a vehicle located near Highway 182.
Nearby residences and businesses were evacuated and an exclusion zone was established around a tow yard on Monday night, with a K9 unit responding from Mississippi State University at the request of the sheriff shortly after.
The K9 gave a positive alert on a vehicle, leaving the Oktibbeha County Emergency Management to begin gathering state and federal assets to the area.
As a precautionary measure, the OCSD shut down Highway 182 from Highway 45 to Camps Airport Road with the assistance of the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
A search was then conducted on the vehicle once all necessary assets were at the scene, with several firearms being located inside the car. The area was cleared after no bombs were discovered, resulting in Highway 182 being opened at approximately 5:30 p.m.
“Despite social media comments and speculation to the contrary, there were NO bomb threats called in to any agency or business,” OCSD released in a social media post. “The business was notified by a person that explosive materials were contained within a vehicle that had been towed to the yard. This prompted the response to search for and recover those materials. At no time did the caller threaten the business or any person there.”
