Six people are now dead after a mass shooting saw 16 struck by gunfire early Saturday morning in Leland. Paired with another shooting that left two dead in Heidelberg on Friday night, it’s one of the deadliest weekends Mississippi has seen in some time.
Leland Mayor John Lee told CBS News the shooting in his city happened shortly after midnight on one of the main streets as people were gathered for a block party celebrating Leland High School’s homecoming. The shooting did not happen on campus, according to Lee.
Four people were pronounced deceased on the scene, while four others were airlifted to hospitals for treatment. Two of those people were confirmed Saturday afternoon to have passed away.
According to Darkhorse Press, the deceased have been identified as Oreshama Johnson, 41, of Leland; Calvin Plant, 19, of Leland; Shelbyona Powell, 25, of Leland; Kaslyn Johnson, 18, of Leland; Amos Brantley, Jr., 18; and JaMichael Jones, 34.
The Leland Police Department told SuperTalk Mississippi News it is unable to provide further information or comment as the investigation is ongoing. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation confirmed it’s assisting with the case, while FBI director Kash Patel posted to social media that his agency is assisting, as well.

Gov. Tate Reeves issued a statement Saturday afternoon, saying those responsible for the Leland shooting and the unrelated yet still fatal shooting in Heidelberg will be “brought to justice.” The shooting in Heidelberg also happened as the city was celebrating homecoming festivities and resulted in two deaths, including that of an expectant mother. The victims were found on campus Friday night at Heidelberg High School.
A person of interest, 18-year-old Tylar Jarod Goodloe, was taken into custody early Saturday in connection with the deaths in Heidelberg. The identities of the victims had not been released by Saturday afternoon.

“Our state is praying for the victims and their families, as well as the entire Heidelberg and Leland communities,” Reeves wrote in the post. “Those responsible will be brought to justice.”
