Police in Mississippi are investigating “jackpotting” at ATMs.
On Monday morning, the Tupelo Police Department responded to a reported ATM break-in at Community Bank on North Gloster Street. Upon arrival, officers met with a bank employee who found the ATM door partially open with signs of forced entry.
Surveillance footage showed two suspects, identified as Hispanic males, arriving in a silver Honda Accord. Bank representatives indicated that similar break-ins occurred at locations in Amory, Madison, and Forest.
According to law enforcement, evidence suggests the same suspects may be involved in the other incidents. The individuals are believed to be engaged in “jackpotting,” a scheme that entails someone gaining internal access to ATMs and manipulating the machine’s software to dispense cash.
This type of crime has primarily been associated with organized groups and has been reported in central and coastal areas of the state in the past.
Authorities are asking the public to report any suspicious behavior around ATMs. No arrests have been made at this time.
