One man is in custody in connection with a shooting that killed one and injured eight others in southwest Mississippi in late May.
According to Jefferson County Sheriff James Bailey, 20-year-old Coutez D’Henry Damper was taken into custody Monday and charged with murder.
On Saturday, May 31, the festival in Jefferson County ended on a violent note when gunshots rang out. 22-year-old Rayshaude Hudson was killed in the shooting, while multiple others were left in critical condition.
“We want to assure the community that we are committed to seeking justice for the victims and their families,” Sheriff Bailey said. “This arrest is a crucial step in holding responsible accountable, but our work is far from over.”
Authorities say more arrests are likely to be made, with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation leading the investigation in partnership with the Fayette Police Department and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Damper was denied bond and is being held at the Jefferson County Jail.
