As we roll into the month of April, spring travel and other holidays are approaching. That means the need for blood donations will increase, and Red Cross officials are sweetening the pot for anyone who donates in April.
Every April donor will be automatically entered for a chance to win one of three $5,000 gift cards. Those who donate between April 1-13 will get a $15 Amazon gift card by email. And those who give from April 14-30 will get an exclusive Red Cross t-shirt.
“The impact of busy spring calendars comes on the heels of an incredibly challenging winter, during which tens of thousands of blood products went uncollected due to weather,” a press release from the American Red Cross reads. “With upcoming holidays celebrations and record-breaking spring break travel expected in the coming week donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with type O blood and those giving platelets.”
With blood only having a 42-day shelf life, no substitute, and no way to manufacture it, volunteer blood and platelet donors are an essential part of patient care. Officials say springtime can disrupt normal giving patterns, but the need for blood is constant.
