The approaching Memorial Day holiday will effectively kick off the summer season. While that means fun in the sun for many, it also means a heightened need for blood donations.
On Wednesday, American Red Cross officials urged Mississippians to consider giving blood ahead of vacation time, pointing to immediate access to blood products as a key part of summer public safety.

“With millions of Americans expected to travel around Memorial Day and engage in water sports, boating, camping and other outdoor activities, the risk of accidents increases,” the Red Cross said in a press release. “Though it can be a busy time, making and keeping blood donation appointments remains a critical priority in May during Trauma Awareness Month.”
Type O donors are especially needed during the warmer months in order for hospitals to meet supply requirements. Many victims also need larger transfusions during traumatic accidents that are more common in the summer.
Helping a neighbor in need isn’t the only benefit to giving during the month of May. Anyone who donates this month will be automatically entered for a chance to win a U.S. trip of their choice for two people. More information on the contest can be found here.
