The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating one fatal crash as a result of its ‘2019 Fourth of July Enforcement Period’.

During the enforcement period, the MHP issued 3,300 citations with 43 DUI arrests. A total of 63 crashes were investigated including 1 fatality and 9 injuries on state, federal highways, and interstate systems.

The fatal wreck occurred in Clarke County on Wednesday afternoon when 20-year-old Zquavius Crain was headed southbound on I-59. Cain’s Toyota left the roadway and collided with a tree and flipped. Cain was pronounced dead at the scene while 20-year-olds Keon Moore & Jeremiah Braziel were taken to a local hospital.

Cain was a rising freshman at East Mississippi Community College, and he was set to become Moore & Braziel’s teammate on the football team. After the crash, the school released the following statement.

“East Mississippi Community College is mourning the tragic death of Zae Crain, a rising freshman and talented student-athlete. Crain, along with Jeremiah Braziel, and Keon Moore, all of Gulfport, were traveling home for the holiday weekend when they were involved in a severe car accident. Braziel and Moore were badly injured and Crain was tragically killed in the crash. Please keep the Crain family, Jeremiah Braziel, Keon Moore, their classmates and teammates in your thoughts and prayers as we grieve this tremendous loss.”

Crain recently graduated from Gulfport High School, where he was a standout defensive back.

The crash remains under investigation by MHP.

The enforcement period, which saw all available troopers assigned to saturation patrols and checkpoints across the state, began on Wednesday morning and ended last night at midnight.
