Officials in Mississippi are warning residents to beware of illegitimate mail regarding voter registration information.

According to Secretary of State Michael Watson, his office and county circuit clerks across Mississippi have received numerous calls regarding mailers distributed by the private entity The Voter Participation Center.

The mailers provide that someone at the address may not be registered to vote. Individuals are then encouraged to complete and submit a voter registration form. According to the secretary of state, the form is not official correspondence from an official government entity and does not indicate a change in anyone’s voter registration status.

“It is critically important to remember you should get your election information from trusted sources, such as your local election officials and the Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office,” a portion of a press release from Watson reads. “Further, entities like The Voter Participation Center may obtain physical mailing address information through Freedom of Information Act requests.”

Those with questions about their status as a registered voter can click here to verify, or contact their county circuit clerk.
