One of Mississippi’s longest-tenured lawmakers announced Wednesday that the 2025 legislative cycle will be his last.
92-year-old state Sen. David Jordan, D-Greenwood, has spent the last 33 years representing District 24, which encompasses Leflore, Panola, and Tallahatchie counties.

As lawmakers reconvened at the beginning of a special session, Jordan’s compatriots celebrated with service of more than three decades with Senate Resolution 1.
“We hereby recognize and commend the outstanding leadership of District 25 State Senator David L. Jordan for his distinguished service in the Mississippi Senate on the occasion of his retirement and extend to Senator Jordan and his family the best wishes of the Senate for future success,” a portion of the resolution reads.
Jordan achieved an undergraduate degree from Delta State, along with earning a master’s degree from the University of Wyoming. He moved on to a career in politics after spending 30 years as a public school teacher in Mississippi.
A special election will be required to fill Jordan’s District 24 seat.
