A seventh person has died after a mass shooting in Leland on Oct. 11, one that saw hundreds of shots fired during a downtown block party celebrating the local high school’s homecoming.
Washington County coroner LaQuesha Watkins said Saturday in a news release that her office was informed by the Hinds County coroner Friday that Ebanee Williams, 25, had died from her injuries at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Others who died from the shooting were Oreshama Johnson, 41; Calvin Plant, 19; Shelbyona Powell, 25; Kaslyn Johnson, 18; Amos Brantley, Jr. 18; and Jamichael Jones, 34. Over a dozen were injured during the incident with at least one of the victims still in critical condition, according to law enforcement.
So far, nine people have been arrested in connection with the shooting, several of them charged with capital murder. The FBI is searching for more people they believe could be involved, as well, and are offering a cash reward of up to $5,000 for help in identifying them.
While authorities have not disclosed a motive or the shooting, both FBI agents and Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell have publicly said the gunfire appears to have been sparked by a disagreement between several individuals.
