While the Volunteers entered the Field of 64 with a higher RPI than the Golden Eagles, the main argument for Hattiesburg as a super-regional host hinged on two points: (1) Southern Miss routinely ranked higher than Tennessee in the Division I rankings throughout the 2023 regular season, and (2) When both schools hosted super regionals last postseason, Hattiesburg’s numbers easily trumped those of Knoxville’s.
During the 2022 Hattiesburg Super Regional between Southern Miss and Ole Miss, the in-state matchup attracted nearly 5,500 fans per game in comparison to an average of 4,593 at the Knoxville Super Regional between Tennessee and Notre Dame.
Game one of the 2023 Hattiesburg Super Regional will take place Saturday, June 10 at 2 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPNU. At this time, tickets are not expected to be sold to the general public due to every seat at Pete Taylor Park being held by a season-ticket holder.
