The Southern Miss football team gave fans a glimpse into what the 2025 season might look like on Saturday when the team held its first preseason scrimmage in Hattiesburg – one that was filled with a lot of new faces.
Redshirt senior quarterback Braylon Braxton showed why he was recently predicted to be Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year. The Marshall transfer threw for 170 yards with two touchdowns, one to Utah State transfer running back Robert Briggs and another on a 30-yard strike to a former Marshall teammate in Carl Chester.
UAB transfer Landry Lyddy added 168 yards passing, while John White threw for 68 yards and Boston College transfer Jacobe Robinson for 51 yards.
Marshall transfer Bralon Brown caught five passes for 73 yards. Chester had five grabs for 72 yards, and Davis Dalton added 61 yards on six catches.
While the rushers were stopped on first contact on their respective carries during the almost two-hour scrimmage that consisted of around 85 plays, Central State transfer Tyrese Weeks managed to squeeze into the end zone unscathed on a one-yard run.
The Golden Eagle defense registered four interceptions, including one a Kyle Davis pick returned for a touchdown by the Howard transfer. The other three interceptions came courtesy of Avery Sledge and Marshall transfers Guylijah Theodule and Ishmael Ibraheem.
“I did like the fact that both sides of the ball made some plays,” first-year Southern Miss head coach Charles Huff said. “There definitely was some positive. Some guys who we were expecting to play well did just that.”
The team is off Sunday before returning to practice on Monday. Southern Miss will kick off the upcoming season on Aug. 30 at home against Mississippi State. The game begins at 11 a.m. will be broadcast on ESPN.
