The next generation of robotic surgery technology has made its way to a hospital in Mississippi’s capital city.
St. Dominic Health in Jackson has acquired the Intuitive da Vinci 5 surgical system, an advanced technology used in minimally invasive procedures. The robotic platform, according to officials, is designed to transform surgery to enable better outcomes, efficiency, and actionable insights.
“We’re not just investing in technology — we’re investing in better outcomes, more options, and more compassionate care for our community. The da Vinci 5 is expected to help reduce complications, minimize scarring, and shorten recovery times for patients,” Jeremy Tinnerello, St. Dominic Jackson market president, said.
The da Vinci 5 system can be used for urology, gynecology, thoracic, and general surgical procedures. With more than 150 new design innovations, the system includes 3DHD visualization, wristed instruments, intuitive motion, force feedback technology, and an ergonomic design.
Designed to blend into everyday procedures, the robotic-assisted system mimics the movements of a surgeon, translating their hand movements into smaller, more precise movements during an operation.
“The system simplifies setup and allows us to manage more functions independently from the console, which can help reduce overall procedure time and improve operating room efficiency,” Dr. Paul Seago, a gynecology and oncology surgeon and chief clinical officer at St. Dominic Health, added.
“Plus, we now have the capability to consult in real time with colleagues in other locations during a procedure — bringing broader expertise into the operating room when needed.”
