A Starkville woman is faced with a first-degree murder charge in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred Thursday morning.
According to the Starkville Police Department, officers were dispatched to a residence on Gladney Street at 12:57 a.m. for a reported stabbing. Upon arrival, officers found 27-year-old Tykell Harvey suffering from fatal injuries. Harvey was pronounced dead on the scene.
Investigators determined that Harvey and the 28-year-old suspect, Amiya Brown, were in a dating relationship. Following the investigation, Brown was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Currently, she is being held at the Oktibbeha County jail.
Police emphasized the ongoing dangers of domestic violence, noting that 1 in 4 women (24.3%) and 1 in 7 men (13.8%) in the U.S. have been victims of severe violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
Officials urged victims and those who suspect abuse involving close relationships to seek help immediately, warning that “it’s too dangerous not to.” The department stated it is committed to protecting victims, holding offenders accountable, and connecting individuals with available support.
