Suspect in Canton standoff dead from self-inflicted gunshot wound

The suspect involved in a standoff in a Canton neighborhood has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Canton Police Chief Otha Brown.

Officers with the U.S. Marshals task force arrived at a residence located on Sherwood Drive and Dobson Avenue in Canton on Wednesday morning to serve a warrant.

A standoff between the suspect and the task force began shortly after 11:00 a.m.

Deputy commander of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Task Force, Carlos Cosby, released that the man had a warrant for his arrest in California for arson.

Law enforcement agencies involved in the standoff included the Canton Police Department, Gluckstadt Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Deputies, and U.S. Marshals.

The man’s identity has not been released at this time.
