A suspect believed to be linked to the deadly shooting at Alcorn State University has been taken into custody.
Officers with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation arrested 26-year-old Taevion Doss in connection with the fatal gunfire that rang out while the university was celebrating homecoming on Saturday. Doss is charged with murder, two counts of aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon on school property.
Campus police officers responded Saturday at approximately 6:30 p.m. to a call regarding shots fired in the Industrial Technology Building. Upon arrival, officers found three people suffering from gunshot wounds. One person, identified as 29-year-old Brekyra Fisher, received fatal injuries.
“I’m proud of the hard work and collaboration between the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and our local partners,” Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell said. “Together, we’re sending a clear message that senseless crime has no place in Mississippi.”
Officials are still investigating this case. The shooting allegedly committed by Doss took place during a violent weekend in Mississippi, with gunfire ringing out at multiple homecoming and football-related events. Shootings in Leland, Heidelberg, Rolling Fork, and the tailgate area outside of the Jackson State football stadium claimed the lives of at least nine people, while leaving multiple others suffering injuries.
In response to the violence, the Mississippi High School Activities Association encouraged all of its member institutions to cancel on-campus tailgating events for the remainder of the season. Mississippi Valley State University, which is holding homecoming festivities this weekend, has announced that it will beef up security.
