Two Mississippi cities have been recognized for their ambiance and charm by cracking the top 25 in Southern Living’s latest list of communities on the rise.

Coming in at No. 12 and No. 19, Gulfport and Hattiesburg, respectively, have been lauded for their unique attributes in the publication’s The Best Cities on the Rise 2024.

Gulfport — No. 12

Located in the heart of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the city has elevated its charm with its beaches, fresh seafood, homey feel, and a slew of entertainment acts at its local coliseum. In addition, Gulfport hauls in spectators from across the world when Cruisin’ the Coast rolls into town and boasts a major Christmas light display that is unrivaled in the state.

“Located on the Gulf of Mexico, the siren song of sandy beaches and calm waters has long beckoned visitors here. But natural attractions aren’t the only thing contributing to Gulfport’s tourism-driven economy,” the publication said of the Coastal city. “Plans for Gulfport Town Center, a forthcoming development that will include 200 apartments, a multi-use hotel, and a business district, located at the intersection of Highways 90 and 49, say otherwise.”

Hattiesburg — No. 19

With two universities and arguably the state’s best restaurant scene, Hattiesburg has cultivated a unique sense of character with plenty of activities for people of all ages. Visitors and residents alike are able to kick back and enjoy the fall and spring weather while catching a Golden Eagle football and baseball game. Hattiesburg, hosting a quaint zoo with plenty of exotic animals and a soon-opening water park, has become a destination spot for families.

“Dubbed the Hub City due to its location at a crossroads of major rail lines and transportation networks, this southern Mississippi town has long been thought of as a stopover destination,” the publication continued. “In recent years, it has put that reputation to rest thanks to a strong showing of creative energy from two universities, unique local businesses, and a bustling downtown.”
