Enrollment at Mississippi’s largest universities for the Fall 2022 semester remained relatively steady, but one school saw an increase in student population while the others experienced a slight decrease.

According to the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL), Ole Miss was the only major university in the Magnolia State to see an uptick in enrollment while Mississippi State, Southern Miss, and Jackson State faced a minor decrease in numbers from the Fall of 2021.

  • Ole Miss – 22,967 (+1,111 from Fall 2021; 5.1% increase)
  • Mississippi State – 22,649 (-437 from Fall 2021; 1.9% decrease)
  • Southern Miss – 13,526 (-620 from Fall 2021; 4.4% decrease)
  • Jackson State – 6,906 (-174; 2.5% decrease)

Accounted for in Ole Miss’ current class is 19,869 students at the main campus in Oxford and 3,098 at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

This is the first time since 2020 that MSU did not have the highest student enrollment amongst Mississippi universities.
