The deadline is approaching for Mississippi residents affected by the March severe weather and tornadoes to apply for federal disaster assistance.

It’s been two months since seven tornadoes traveled through 12 counties on March 24, resulting in a range of damage to nearly 2,000 houses and the death of 22 Mississippi residents.

So far, tornado survivors have been approved for over $10 million in FEMA grants and over $16 million in Small Business Administration assistance.

Homeowners and renters in Carroll, Humphreys, Monroe, Montgomery, Panola, or Sharkey counties who have uninsured or underinsured storm-related losses may be able to get federal assistance.

FEMA grants can help with temporary lodging expenses, basic home repairs, or other essential disaster-related needs not covered by insurance.

The grants are nontaxable and do not affect eligibility for Social Security, Medicaid, or other federal benefits.

Those wishing to receive FEMA assistance can apply in person at the following disaster recovery centers from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.:

  • Humphreys County: Humphreys County Library, 105 Hayden Street, Belzoni, MS 39038
  • Monroe County: Justice Court Building, 1619 Highway 25, Amory, MS 38821
  • Montgomery County: Montgomery County Coliseum, 200 Recreation Dr., Winona, MS 38967
  • Panola County: MS State University Extension Center, 245 Eureka St. Suite C, Batesville, MS 38606
  • Sharkey County: Heritage Manor, 431 West Race Street, Rolling Fork, MS 39159

Applicants can also visit DisasterAssistance.gov or call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 from 6:00 a.m. to midnight.

The deadline is currently set for Thursday, May 25 at 11:59 p.m. CT.
