Second-in-command out at MDOC, replacement hired

One of the top officials within the Mississippi Department of Corrections is leaving the agency.

According to Darkhorse Press, Karei McDonald, Jr. was escorted by the Criminal Investigations Division from his office in Jackson on Thursday. McDonald, who has been with MDOC since 2020, was executive deputy commissioner of administration and finance.

In an email memo obtained by SuperTalk Mississippi News, MDOC Commissioner Burl Cain informed employees of McDonald’s replacement:

Effective immediately, November 9, 2023, Executive Deputy Commissioner Karei McDonald is no longer with the Mississippi Department of Corrections,” Cain wrote. “Derrick Garner has been appointed as our new Deputy Commissioner of Finance. Please help us welcome him to his new position and give him your full support.”

Garner has worked for MDOC since July 2020 and previously served as chief fiscal officer for the agency. He has also worked for the Mississippi Gaming Commission and the Office of the State Auditor.
