Three central Mississippi correctional officers are now on the other side of the bars.
Mississippi Department of Corrections officials announced Wednesday that a contraband smuggling scheme was uncovered at the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County. Cell phones, food, alcohol, and other controlled substances were allegedly illegally brought into the facility.
49-year-old Sherry McCollum, 33-year-old Kiarra Michael, and 33-year-old Theresa Hasty were all arrested in connection with the alleged crimes.
“Regretfully, sometimes our employees cross the line, and we must send a message introducing contraband into our facilities will not be tolerated,” MDOC Commissioner Burl Cain said. “We will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, and the corrupt inmates will receive severe disciplinary action.”
McCollum, a native of Jackson, was charged with introduction of contraband, two counts of introduction of a controlled substance into a correctional facility, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
She was arrested on Sunday after officers searched her belongings and found 232 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 76 grams of marijuana, four cellphones, and a series of food items.
Michael, also of Jackson, was charged under the general prohibitions of state and conspiracy. She was also arrested on Sunday and was found to be in possession of 10 cellphones and a phone charger.
Hasty, a Vicksburg native, was charged with the sale, possession, or use of alcoholic beverages within facilities, and conspiracy. She was arrested Monday after being found in possession of 30.4 fluid ounces of liquor.
