Electric power generation company Entergy is looking to fill more than 1,000 job openings in Mississippi.
The company, which is the largest energy supplier in the state, has 1,061 opportunities that are “funded and budgeted,” yet vacant. Mississippi Central District Public Service Commissioner De’Keither Stamps says he and his commission colleagues have traveled the Magnolia State seeking prospects, particularly young people, to seek these available jobs.
“We need young people working,” Stamps said on MidDays with Gerard Gibert. “Young folks could get to work and make six figures in five years as a lineman. They could be engineers.”
From engineering positions to line worker posts and project manager roles, Entergy has an occupation available for someone from just about any walk of life. While some of the openings require four-year or advanced college degrees and experience-related accolades, the overwhelming majority only depend on a prospective candidate earning a certificate or an associate’s degree, opening doors for most candidates. Educational requirements are listed for each job on Entergy’s website.
Stamps further noted that a bulk of the jobs in the utility space are “recession-proof,” or likely to remain stable during economic downturns. As part of the campaign to spur applications, Stamps is calling on folks to urge their friends, family members, and unemployed loved ones to take advantage of a chance at a meaningful occupation.
“We need everybody to do a little ‘couch kicking.’ Don’t leave the house going to work, leaving young folks on the couch at home. Get those young folks to work, especially in the utility space,” Stamps said. “Most of these jobs are recession-proof. 90% of the jobs in the utility space don’t even require a college degree. They require a certification process or an associate’s degree, so let’s get our young people to work to fill these positions.”
